Art

WHINO began in 2007 as Art Whino art gallery. For over 15 years, it has continued to be a catalyst for art throughout the DMV area. The art that Art Whino and WHINO focus on is part of a new movement most commonly referred to as lowbrow art. It encompasses over 12 genres of art such as muralism, street art, illustration, and street art. Although it spans multiple disciplines, they share the theme of pop culture or a reaction to the current culture, better known by the name pop surrealism. The movement arose in the Los Angeles, California area in the mid-90s, stemming from skate culture with references to underground comics, punk music, and the hot-rod cultures of the street. Most lowbrow artworks are paintings, but there are also toys, digital art, and sculptures.

retail area

Artists in their quest to explore their crafts have started a subculture with custom collectibles. These collectibles elevate the artists' craft to a whole new level by introducing collectors to their vivid imaginations in the form of free-standing sculptures. At the front of WHINO, you will find displays showcasing these collectibles with new releases updated monthly. These sculptures range in size from as small as 8 inches to as large as life-size, standing 5 feet high. The editions are usually limited to 100 pieces or less and typically sell out quickly. WHINO, with its mission to introduce the DC Metro region to alternative art cultures, naturally carries a large assortment of custom collectibles from suppliers in California, Singapore, China, and beyond.

music

On Fridays and Saturdays, WHINO adds another layer to the guest experience. On Fridays, we feature DJs to elevate the lounge vibe with their lively sets. Saturdays showcase a rotation of DJs who play vinyl-only sets, along with our in-house bands that perform Jazz, Funk, and Americana Explorations, highlighting talented band members on guitar, bass, drums, and saxophone. Each weekend, we transform WHINO into a dynamic venue where food, drinks, music, and art converge.
